On December 21, 2021, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced that beginning January 3, 2022, patrons age 5 and older will need to show proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 to enter restaurants, bars, indoor fitness facilities, and indoor entertainment and recreation venues where food and beverages are served.
The Public Health Order 2021-2 (“Order”) was passed in response to the Omicron-driven surge and will remain in effect until the City of Chicago is through the influx of cases and no longer at risk of overwhelming hospital capacity.
The Order also provides that employees of the covered entities must likewise show proof of vaccination. Employees who are not fully vaccinated against COVID-19 must comply with a testing requirement and receive a viral (not antibody) test for COVID-19 every 7 days and present proof to their employer.
The City released a COVID-19 Proof of Vaccination Compliance Plan to aid covered entities to comply with the Order.
On December 23, Cook County followed suit and entered its own order (Mitigation Order 2021-11) which requires the same proof of vaccination as Chicago beginning January 3. Evanston, Oak Park, Skokie and Stickney Township are exempt from the Cook County order because they have their own health departments. However, Skokie entered its own order effective January 10.
